Sanctus Herbarium
“The Lord created medicines out of the earth, and the prudent will not despise them” (Sirach 38:4)
Learning about herbs matters because it deepens our reverence for creation, helping us to see how every plant has purpose and design. By understanding their history and studied properties, we gain insight into the ways nature has long supported human wellness and spiritual reflection.
Here we weave together the Christian understanding of creation’s healing design with evidence-based research, offering each profile as a resource for education and reflection.

Herb of Sanctus
Apothecary
Passionflower
Passiflora incarnata
Passionflower is my personal favorite. It is renowned for its calming qualities, long used in traditional herbalism to support rest and peace of mind. Its very name reflects the Christian “Passion” of Christ, early missionaries saw in its striking blossoms symbols of the crucifixion: the corona as the crown of thorns, the five stamens as Christ’s wounds, and the three stigmas as the nails. Today, modern research explores passionflower’s role in easing anxiety and supporting healthy sleep cycles. This herb reminds us that God’s creation weaves together beauty, symbolism, and wellness.
